Stress is something most of us experience at different times in our lives. Sometimes it appears during busy seasons, major life changes, or when we are facing unexpected challenges. While a small amount of stress can help us respond to life’s demands, ongoing or overwhelming stress can begin to affect our health in deeper ways.
Many people think of stress as something that only affects our thoughts or emotions. In reality, stress affects the whole person — mind, body and wellbeing.
When we are under stress, the body activates its natural “fight or flight” response. This response is designed to help us deal with immediate danger by releasing stress hormones that increase our heart rate, heighten alertness and prepare the body for action.
This response can be helpful in short bursts. However, when stress continues for long periods of time, the body remains in a constant state of tension. Over time this can begin to take a toll on both physical and emotional health.
People experiencing prolonged stress may notice symptoms such as:
Sometimes people begin to feel that they are simply “not coping as well as they used to.” In many cases, this is not a personal failure but rather the body signalling that it has been under too much pressure for too long.
Stress can also affect our emotional wellbeing. When we feel overwhelmed, it can become harder to think clearly, make decisions, or maintain a sense of balance in daily life. Small problems may start to feel much bigger, and it can become difficult to switch off from constant worry or mental tension.
Life circumstances often play a role in ongoing stress. Health challenges, relationship difficulties, work pressures, financial strain, or major life transitions can all contribute to a sense of being stretched beyond our capacity.
One of the most important steps in managing stress is recognising when we need support. Many people carry their worries alone, believing they should simply push through. Yet speaking with someone in a supportive and understanding environment can help ease that burden.
Counselling offers a space to pause and reflect on what is contributing to stress in your life. It allows you to explore your thoughts and feelings openly, gain clarity, and begin to develop healthier ways of responding to life’s pressures.
At Still Waters Counselling, the goal is to provide a calm and compassionate space where people can slow down, feel heard, and begin to restore a sense of balance.
While stress is a natural part of life, it does not have to be something you carry alone. With the right support, it is possible to find steadiness again and care for both your emotional and physical wellbeing.
